"Karen". I met Karen at a coffee shop. I overheard her saying she had been trying to get help with her web site for two years. She said when she found web sites that offered help, her experience was horrible. Some services accepted her money, copied her project, and then "held the project hostage" while demanding more money.
Pet Training Web Site. I recently investigated a offer from a Pet Training and Products Web site. They promised me about 38$ each time someone signed up for their service as a result of our advertising. They explained that they only charged their customers 37$, but that they could pay me 38$ because they had additional revenue from other products. They clearly stated that the cost of their service was 37$. When I visited their web site, after pages and pages of motivational text, I finally found the service. They offered it for 37$ as they said, and they also had a time/date ticker which told you that if you did not sign up for their service by a certain time, the price of the service would double. This is an example of high pressure sales. A type of financial punishment if the consumer does not perform a impulsive buy.
Tricky Advertisments. Advertisements on the internet and off have become deceptive, pitching half-truths. A example of tricky marketing is when a advertisement states: "Only 29$ a Month!"* Notice the asterisk? These advertisements conceal fine print which says something like, "(29 for the first 6 months, then 100 per month for the remainder of the contract. Two-year agreement required. Eraly termination fees apply.)" Many consumers are so accustomed to this type of trap advertising that seems normal. The truth is these adds can prey on and enslave many consumers, such as, elderly, young, consumers new to the culture and English language challenged consumers. Consumers need protection! A nineteen-year-old college student, new to campus can read the large print, "...only $39.95 per month!*" Believing the written words, she signs up. In three months the terms change to $99.99 per month. Now the student cannot budget her rent. The student calls the company and asks to be released. The consumer is told she must pay $500.00 to terminate the contract. The company makes $500.00 or the consumer does not pay and her credit for future purchases becomes ruined. Should we really need a lawyer just to sign up for phone service?
